Giants Defeat Nationals 9-5 with Michael Conforto’s Key Hits in Extra Innings
WASHINGTON (AP) — Michael Conforto’s two-run single highlighted a four-run 10th inning as the San Francisco Giants defeated the Washington Nationals 9-5 on Thursday after losing a three-run lead in the ninth inning.
Mike Yastrzemski led off the tenth with a ground ball up the middle against Robert Garcia (2-4). Shortstop CJ Abrams made a wild throw to third in an attempt to get designated runner Jerar Encarnacion, allowing both runners to reach safely. Brett Wisely's bunt single brought in Encarnacion. Patrick Bailey then laid down a bunt that Garcia fielded, but his throw to third was dropped by Ildemaro Vargas. After retiring the next two batters, Conforto hit a blooper to left field for a two-run single, giving the Giants an 8-5 lead. Matt Chapman also contributed with an RBI single, securing the final margin.
Mark Canha broke the 2-2 tie in the ninth with a bases-loaded double, his fourth hit of the game, extending the Giants' lead to 5-2.
In the bottom of the ninth, Luis Garcia Jr. hit a three-run homer with two outs off Giants’ closer Camilo Duval, tying the game and sending it into extra innings.
Duval (4-1) earned the win for the Giants.
Canha finished with a double and three singles as San Francisco (59-58) won three of four games against Washington, moving above .500 for the first time since May 29 when they were 29-28.
Giants manager Bob Melvin was ejected for arguing a called strike three on Canha in the first inning of the game, which experienced rain delays of 50 minutes in the top of the third inning and 72 minutes in the top of the eighth.
San Francisco loaded the bases on a single and two walks in the ninth before Canha's double and a throwing error by right fielder Alex Call allowed three runs to score. In the bottom half, a walk, fielder’s choice, and another walk brought the tying run to the plate. Ildemaro Vargas flied out to right, but Garcia homered on a 1-2 pitch just inside the left-field foul pole.
The Giants loaded the bases against DJ Herz with a double and two walks in the first inning. When Canha was called out on a 2-2 pitch, Melvin was ejected for arguing with home plate umpire Stu Scheurwater from the dugout. Herz allowed two earned runs on four hits and four walks in 2 2/3 innings.
Giants starter Kyle Harrison was pulled with two outs in the fifth inning, having allowed two runs on five hits.
